So this was going to be a "help!" post, but after trying OMG SO MANY THINGS, I'm just going to say this:

Don't upgrade to Windows 10 if you use the Cobal Flux USB adapter boxes, the one that look like https://snag.gy/E4M63s.jpg and https://snag.gy/eQ2rhC.jpg ; it simply won't work. It comes up with "Unknown USB Device (device descriptor request failed)", and nothing I did (and I did many things) fixed it.

This is a USB adapter that just presents as a HID gamepad; it should require *zero* configuration, no drivers, no nothing; under Windows 7 it just works.

If you've already upgraded, take note! You can downgrade in Windows 10 and it puts your Windows 7 back just the way it was!; see http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/

I'm actually really impressed with MS on that point: the downgrade was flawless and now (thank all that's holy) I have my stepmania machine back!

precision's replacement control boxes DO work with windows 10, though

Oh, sweet, Precision's work on Windows 10?

That's exciting! I'm currently running a Windows 7 machine with my old-school control boxes because I can't get em working on anything newer than Windows 7.

I should order some of the new control boxes in. Would be good to have around. Thanks for the heads up!
