[SM5] [Help] Themes showing mostly black/default elements

I hope this is the right forum to put this in but every time I try to change theme I either crash or the game becomes almost entirely black save for a few elements like text and the gameplay arrows/receptors. I have done this with several skins included SM5 skins so I don't think it's a version issue.

You are probably installing the themes wrong.

If the themer has not packaged the theme in a .smzip, then you have to look
inside the archive to see how the directory layout looks.

2) Theme name as a folder
This one will have to be extracted in the Themes directory. You will get a
new folder with the files.

This is exactly how I have it, unless I am reading this completely wrong

Look inside those theme folders and see if they have metrics.ini, BGAnimations, and other folders at the top level, or if there's another level of folder inside.

There is a metrics.ini, but there is no BGAnimations or more folders, just a handful of .pngs and luas

That's really odd, post a link to one of them, maybe the author did something screwy wrong, or maybe it's meant to be an addon to an existing theme.

I can't seem to find where I got the one I posted about in particular but here is a similar skin that I couldn't get working and has the same effect when I select it in game. This one has more images in it than the other one along with .sprite files and .redir files, but is still missing BGAnimations or any additional folders.

That's a NoteSkin. It belongs in NoteSkins/dance/.
