Forums » StepMania Releases » SM 5.0.9 Failed to Run upon installation (Windows XP)

A fresh installation (or three tries, rather) of SM 5.0.9 on my Windows XP PC (service pack 2) has yielded the following error message.

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"

I have not yet tried installing the missing .dll fix spoken about in the 2014 forum post. However, assuming that is not the issue (the error alert does not indicate that it is), I was wondering how I can fix this.

Install the 32-bit (x86) MSVC runtime. I think you need 2012, maybe 2013.
Thanks. I went ahead and tried installing both the 2013 and 2013 versions of "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistrubutable (x86)". Both failed due to...

"This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service"

Guess that means I'll install Service Pack 3 and try again!
Bad news: after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3, AND after installing the 2013 and 2012 MSVC runtimes x86 (in that order), the same error message appeared upon launching Stepmania.exe (stepmania 5).

I restarted the computer after the installation, that did not help.

Another odd note: on the downloads page, there was an "arm.exe" file that was included. I tried running it, but it was "not a valid Win32 application"

What should I do now? haha

Oh, sorry I also tried re-installing SM5 AFTER the MSVC runtime updates were installed. No success.
StepMania 5.0.9 was never designed to run on anything that is before Windows Vista.
If you want the StepMania 5 experience on Windows XP, Windows Longhorn or Windows XP Embedded, you'll have to use SM5 Beta 4 or earlier.
