You can change your name to anything, name uniqueness isn't enforced.

Password resets can only be done manually for now, I'm not sure why the reset emails don't go through anymore.

I set the page to send me notifications of new replies and I've got none.

I wrote the system. It's not forced. If it won't let you change it, make your changes on ref.stepmania.com and make sure you remembered to enter your password when updating your profile.
