SM won't detect pad?

I bought a pad a little while back and the first few times all I had to do was plug and play right on my PC and everything was fine. For some reason now my PC will recognize the pad but I can't get Stepmania 5 to detect it. When It worked previously I remember seeing something a message at the top letting me know it was detected and I don't know the difference between what I was doing before and what I'm doing now that could cause this issue. I've tried with SM 5 and 3.9 on windows and mac and in each case the computer still detects the pad and it's just stepmania that ignores it.

Does anyone know what might be causing the problem or how to fix?

Is your pad mapped? I believe some pads will automap so that the left arrow on your pad is assigned to the LEFT button in the game, and so on, but not all pads do this.

You might need to go into Options and then Config Key/Joy Mappings and map each panel on your pad if you haven't.

It automapped the first few times but now it doesn't and I don't have the slightest idea as to why or how to get it to again. When I go to manually map it through options SM won't detect the pad so when I try to register a control nothing happens.

Do you have the pad plugged in before running StepMania?

I've never had an instance where StepMania wouldn't recognize my dance pad when the PC would (except for the previous build of SM5).
