okay so i just found an old dance pad that came with the Xbox360 DDR game. i have windows 7, is there a way to configure it with stepmania?
You may have issues on Windows as I think the 360 controller driver can't handle the DDR mats.
If you have a Linux machine, you may want to try it, as both xpad and xboxdrv should be able to make it work.

Works perfectly under Linux.
Now, if your Universe mat is broken, it'll still be broken and no amount of driver coding will change that.

mat is fine, ive seen guides on this forum to get the pad to work for WIN7 however they are old and some links to software/drivers are dead. dont have a Linux machine also. if all elese fails is there any other mat thats good on windows 7?

Having the same problems as Anthony. Anybody have a solution other than the dance pad code. Older links don't exist anymore.
