Announcing BeatFreaX!

For the past few months (since March 2015) I've been working on a Beatmania-style game for StepMania 5. Originally conceived as a kind of "screw Konami, I'm making my own game!" response to the shutting down of Programmed World, it has since expanded its scope and shifted its focus towards:

* Proper BMS support in StepMania 5; an up-to-date, maintained, open-source, cross-platform BMS player
* A beginner-friendly and casual-friendly DJ simulator game, fun for everyone from newbies to experts
* A banging songlist of underground and amateur musicians to make sure no one can resist moving their feet while playing!

I'm planning on releasing this game for free hopefully in the first half of 2016. In the meantime, I'll be updating this thread with teasers and BeatFreaX will be playable at a select few arcades and events over the next few months so stay tuned for updates!

Check out the gameplay video below:

Interested in seeing and playing your tracks in BeatFreax?

I'm looking for amateur and underground musicians to fill this game with banging tunes! If you're interested in hearing your music in my game, just give me a shout -- all I need is the split tracks (or the project file if you use FL) and I will take it from there and let you know when your track's in the game!

Want to play the game before it's released?

I'm also looking for playtesters of all different types: Windows, Mac, Linux, beginners, experts, casuals, kaidens, DAO users, keyboard users, and everyone else! If you fancy giving my game a go and giving me feedback, or you know someone who may be interested (or amused) at trying out my game, just send me a message. Bonus points if you can compile Stepmania for yours or other platforms!

You got me hyped, especially since Zardoru has been breaking raindrop on Linux for a while now.

I'll shoot you a PM when I have more time to playtest.

If you add ez2dj, popn music, sound voltex, and djmax etc... I hope it could be great bms player..

Right now I'm focusing on IIDX style gameplay, but there's no reason ez2dj, pop'n and DJMAX modes couldn't be added! I'm not sure there are even any BMSes for ez2dj however. If you know of any could you let me know?

Sound Voltex on the other hand isn't planned since it would require analogue input for the knobs, which Stepmania doesn't support yet. I believe sound voltex support is planned in the distant future, but in the meantime you could check out K-Shoot Mania.

Since the OP doesn't bother to update, I will.

- The "game"(more on that later) has changed name to BeatFreeX, and with multiple things using the name spelled with an a I can see why.
- The open beta is live.
- The "game" is actually a bunch of files you slap on vanilla SM5, so you have to make a clean install of it first.
- Both the site and the repo only say "Stepmania 5". Even if it works with with every version of "Stepmania 5" it would be nice to clarify if it will work on 5.1 base since that's coing soon.
- The player does not play BMS files.
- Long notes(Charge notes in IIDX jargon) work like SM holds instead.
- Notes sometimes have weird dots in them and sometimes don't.
- There is no IIDX-accurate scoring.
- The menu navigation is weird. You change the song with white keys instead of the turntable, access options by holding black keys instead of Start, and choose song with Start instead of any black key.
- Not everything is skinned and you can see SM5 elements here and there.

But hey, at least the developer didn't deliberately break the player on Linux, unlike a dev of certain other game(yes Zardoru, I'm still salty even though it's been almost a year).
