Forums » General StepMania » TV/Monitor for Stepmania setup (is input lag important)?

I'm in the process of putting together a dedicated home ITG/Stepmania setup. I'm going to order some nice pads, and I need to get a TV or monitor for the setup. How important is the TV or monitor, in particular, how important is input lag? Should I dish out for a nice monitor with minimal lag, or is it fine to get a cheap TV?

Displays vary wildly in terms of latency, a lot of common cheap HDTV's have something like 100ms of delay (most of them have some kind of game mode that helps, but do a bit of research before buying)

Right, which is why I'm asking how important it is for Stepmania. I wouldn't use a laggy TV for playing an FPS for example. I know Stepmania has some tools for adjusting for latency, but I don't know how they well they work in practice.

I would say that it's possible to play Stepmania with monitor lag, but then it would take longer to see whether you got a Perfect or a Great or a Miss, and it would be somewhat harder to play. I would definitely suggest a monitor without lag, unless you have no other options.

I found the DisplayLag database to be very helpful in selecting a monitor which I use for SM5 and nothing else (arcade machine): http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

To provide a reference point, I selected the BenQ BL3200PT which averages 28ms latency according to that database. Many people have tried it out (accuracy players, stamina players, speed players, etc.) in-person and no one has felt the latency was an issue when playing.
