I know that there were problems running StepMania on the Raspberry Pi. But the Beaglebone Black has much higher specs, does StepMania with BGVideos run at 60hz 720p through the BBB?

I don't think it will run very well, probably not even good enough to go through the menus without lagging.

You might want to try compiling OpenITG instead since it's ancient and doesn't demand as much.

I haven't bought one and I'm not a fan of oITG it's ugly and buggy. I was considering getting the BBB to have a micro PC for stepmania but it seems even getting audio out takes some tinkering unless you use HDMI for audio which causes serious lag.

SM doesn't run poorly on the RPi because the RPi is too slow, it runs poorly because the port is incomplete and it falls back to software rendering. The beaglebone would have the same problem. You'd need a Tegra K1 or something with full OpenGL drivers (not GLES) to run SM as-is.
