Can't get characters to work!

Before giving me that "YOU NEED THE BONE FILES!" quip, I HAVE THE BONE FILES.
I have some characters installed, but there's no option to select them! Can anyone help?

options > display options > appearance options > dancing characters >

If you set it to random, the characters will load into StepMania 5.x. Randomly of course which at least tells you that adding characters still work!

As for the 'select' feature for some reason character selection doesn't appear to exist in the default theme of stepmania 5.0 I haven't tried any of the other stepmania 5.x themes and if someone can suggest one that does have a character select menu that would be cool.
