Forums » General Questions » (Solved)No sound on Stepmania 5 beta 3 on Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit

1
Hey, everyone.
I would like to know what to do to fix this.
I've followed a small tutorial from this topic http://www.stepmania.com/forums/general-questions/show/260?start=8 and many others (that I can't even remember) and now I'm stuck with this, I don't know what to do now. The game seems to run fine (I haven't done many tests), but I'm not getting sound at all. I'm not so new at Linux, but I'm still learning how to use it.

My laptop is a Gateway M-6804m and I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit (Trusty Tahr).
Here's what the Terminal displays when I run from it:

sudo ./stepmania
Don't run stepmania as root, there's not a reason to, ever.
If you ran stepmania as root because stepmania couldn't open the sound device, try exiting things that might be locking the sound device before starting stepmania.

God damn it, I'm so upset with myself, but I still need to check if everything is running fine.

UPDATE
Everything seems to run fine on the first try. I played the songs that are included(Springtime, Mecha-Tribe Assault and Goin' Under) with a Wii dance pad(I got it when I bought Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2) connected to my laptop with the "GC Controller Adapter for PC USB" from ebay.
Should I delete this topic? I don't think is worth to keep it when the solution is just to remove the "sudo" part.

I'm gonna open a new thread if I don't get a reply, but can either help me out?

In my case, I couln't even load alsa-sw. I've done so many things I can't even remember. Basically, here's what I got:

I enabled audio mixing I think, but it's still not working.

My guess is that something else that plays sound has locked the ALSA device and is preventing Stepmania from using it. Since you say you've tried a lot of things, I'm going to guess it's your window manager, as you've probably tried closing everything else. Sound has been touchy here and there for me too, when I was on debian squeeze I couldn't have anything that played sound running when I started stepmania, even if it was paused or stopped. Now I'm on jessie and that problem has mysteriously vanished.
Unfortunately, I don't have the spare time to install different distros and window managers and figure out the unique ways that problems occur when using them. I've always favored Sawfish as my window manager because it doesn't have a lot of extra stuff tacked on and doesn't continually grow the way Gnome and KDE do.
In short, I don't know what can fix your problem on the window manager you're using, I just know the particular configuration that works without problems for me.
