Hi,
I read a bit about this concern over internet, found some sites as this one or this other one.
The installation went all good with Stepmania 5 beta 3 , but when I launch it, there's no sound.

I get the following errors, are showned in the two previous links :

Crash backtrace component: x86 custom backtrace

Crash lookup component: dladdr
Crash demangle component: cxa_demangle
Runtime library: glibc 2.18
Threads library: NPTL 2.18

It's told to edit the file in Data/StepMania.ini.
Now there is the problem : I don't have any :\
No StepMania.ini in the whole stepmania/ directory.

What should I do ?
Thank you very much :)

Instead of Data/StepMania.ini, preferences are now stored in ~/.stepmania-5.0/Save/Preferences.ini
You probably only need to run pasuspender, and not worry about setting the device in Preferences.ini.

Thank you :D
But what is pasuspender ? Looks like it isn't a file :\

EDIT : Ok,I ran "pasuspender ./stepmania", but still no sound.

Do you have pulse audio installed? If you do, then pasuspender is supposed to suspend pulse audio so that other things can use the sound device. If you don't have pulse audio installed, then the problem is something else. Try closing other programs that are using the sound device before starting stepmania.
If that doesn't work, search for a package for your distro that contains "alsa-oss" or "aoss" and use that to run stepmania. aoss provides a layer of OSS support in alsa so that programs that can't use alsa can use it.

I do have pulse audio and pasuspender works well. It stops (for the example) a Youtube video soundtrack. The problem it doesn't recognize the program a program that needs an output.
Scree
I installed the alsa-plugins-oss, but it doesn't change anything. I say too that Stepmania is the only program that doesn't work with pulseaudio.

Well, I don't have pulse audio installed and I have no wish to risk messing up sound support on my machine, so I'm flying blind and out of ideas here.

any conclusions on this? I have the same problem. it seems stepmania is calling the alsa driver with an invalid parameter - doesnt seem related to te sound being "held" by someone else...

I found some info that might be relevant.
Run "cat /proc/asound/version" to see what your alsa version is.
I get this, and alsa works fine for me: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.24.
Someone else that can't get stepmania has this version string: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k3.13.0-32-generic.

I don't have a solution, but it might be useful to know if that's the problem.
