So I played StepMania before and I had SM5 installed. I had to uninstall it for a bit but recently I installed again but now each time that I try playing, I get a problem. When it's time to play (specifically when I input keys) my game drops to ~5 fps and jumps around and I pretty much fail out immediately. It worked before now it doesn't. Halp. Windows 8 (unfortunetly) Lenovo G580.
This sounds kind of like you need to update your graphics driver or switch between d3d and opengl (opengl works better, but on a few systems you want to use d3d).
Edit %APPDATA%/StepMania 5/Preferences.ini and find VideoRenderers= and switch the order of whatever is there (i.e. from opengl,d3d to d3d,opengl or vice versa)

Still a helpful post years later. Upgraded to Win10, and SM was constantly dropping down to 30 FPS. Switching to d3d brought it back up to a rock steady 60 FPS. Thanks!
