So I compiled the newest version following the instructions from the text files in Bulid folder(using CMake QT GUI) and everything installed nicely and plays smoothly, but the game doesn't make any sound.

I think this is a problem with something locking the audio device and not letting stepmania use it. If pulseaudio is running, there should be a command to make it release the audio device.
One person said "pulseaudio -k" killed the pulseaudio daemon and allowed sound in stepmania to work, but you should look up what that does before trying it.

Neither that or "killall pulseaudio" which also appeared in other similar problems did anything, even the logs are exactly the same except for the date.

pasuspender ./stepmania or compile it with pulse support or set your sound device to "default" in Preferences.ini

You could try installing the alsaoss package, which emulates oss through alsa. Then you can start it from the command line with "aoss ./stepmania".
I think I've actually seen that same alsa version string from other people with sound problems, maybe something weird broke with that specific version.

Now the sound works but moth the game and the sound are very choppy even with disabled desktop compositing and in fullscreen. At least they're consistent at it, because I still hit mostly perfects and marvelouses. Still, it would be nice to run it smoothly.

I finally had time to check my logs, and that specific alsa version has been a problem for other people too. You could try using a newer or older kernel until a dev or some good samaritan has a kernel version with that problem and figures it out.

I'm going to be upgrading soon, probably to 3.16 kernel or newer, and if I have that problem, I'll be digging into it.
