Can you change the apparent difficulty of simfiles (I want to convert my DDR songs to the ITG scale) using Notepad? Thanks!

When I try to save the file, it says "Access denied". How do I fix that?

What operating system is your computer running?

It's pretty common to run into permission issues on relatively recent versions of Windows, and the "fix" is usually to move your StepMania directory outside of the Program Files or Program Files (x86) directory. Be sure you're logged in as an administrator as well.

It still isn't working. I can make the changes and save them, but they aren't showing up in-game.

You might still have fast-load enabled on your StepMania, the option to disable it is located in 'Advanced Options' (or something to that effect) if I'm not mistaken.

If you wanna save some time, shakesoda has a code over on this forum that divides the difficulty by 1.5, which practically converts it from DDRX to ITG.
