ok so the timing of stepmania has always been spot on for me, never had to change the global offset, always been at 0. last night I was creating steps for a song and I finished late last night, tried it out and was what I believe was perfect. I have quite a few song on stepmania too and most of them didn't have timing problems either but I start up stepmania today and go to play my new song and the timing is way off. I figured something was wrong with the song so I go to edit it and play it with claps and what not, and the claps are spot on just like I had it last night but the notes were way off sync. Confused I tried a few songs that I already had on there that I knew had good timing (I.E. Can't stop falling in love speed mix from DDR Extream) and they were the same, horrible timing but claps in sync, so I tried the automatic set global offset thing and the timing was so bad that it wouldn't even fix it because I kept getting boos and bads. so I manually changed the offset to-.05 to see how much of a difference that made, still was too off to adjust it in game. my offset is currently at -1.51 in order for it to have good timing, I don't know if its perfect yet or not but why would the timing be basically perfect last night at an offset of 0 and this morning, the offset has to be -1.51 for everything to be in sync.

also If I do have to use an offset of -1.51 or whatever from now on, what is a good way to fine tune it so it's perfect or it's as close as I can get it, cause the set global offset automatically while playing or whatever is nice but I'm not perfect lol. (recently got a C on MAX 300 on expert :D) any help would be appreciated. I would also prefer to not have to reinstall stepmania if possible cause I don't know exactly where stepmania saves my song records (AAA, AA, C exc.) I only know there in the stepmania 5 folder in %appdata% no clue which file within there and the problem may be within there but I doubt it cause I moved that entire folder out of there and had it create a new one to see if that worked and I had the same problem

Thank You

Try going to Options > Calibrate Audio Sync again and then tap to the beat of the song with the arrows. That should sync the music with the judge (so you should get Marvelouses). Make sure you tap to the beat of the song not when the arrows come up.

That's what I was talking about with the Global Offset. That's what that feature changes and It wouldn't even adjust the steps they were off so bad. Apparently if you're getting boos and bads while doing that it won't correct the timing. I am more or less wondering why it jumped in offset THAT much in the span of less then 12 hours

-1.51 is definitely wrong (you've probably got it lined up an entire measure or two off or something). you should reset it to 0 using shift+F11/F12 in gameplay and find the closest thing to 0 that works, do it manually if you can't hit all flawless/perfect on the sync screen. You most definitely do not have 1.5 seconds of latency, that would be completely unusable.

That's my point, my offset shouldn't be -1.51 but when I tried it at a 0 offset with a NORMAL song that actually was on time before this happened it was way off. it's not the timing of the song being off or anything and it's not my computer either because other games don't have that lag. the songs aren't lined up wrong or anything because I tried songs that are actually lined up correctly and there is still that major lag without the -1.51 offset.

idk, with that offset it seems to be working like normal so I'll just keep it as is but if anyone knows why this would happen then please let me know or has a possible fix that would be cool.

Reinstalling won't affect your scores and almost certainly won't affect the problem.
Your scores are in the Save/LocalProfiles and Save/MachineProfile folders in the stepmania 5 folder you found in appdata.
I'm pretty confused by your problem too. 1.5 seconds is definitely wrong, that's an entire measure at 170 bpm. If the steps are off by a whole measure, you should be able to tell if it's a song you're familiar with. It just feels wrong even when they're on beat.
The main factors in sync that I'm aware of are:
1. Global offset. This is in Save/Preferences.ini as GlobalOffsetSeconds and is what you have been modifying.
2. Visual delay. This is in Save/Preferences.ini as VisualDelaySeconds and should probably be zero. You can view and adjust its current value by holding F3 and pressing Y or U to change it. It's a bit far fetched, but maybe your cat sat on F3 and U and turned the visual delay way up.
3. Simfile offset. This is in the simfile and is probably not the source of the problem.

<@shakesoda> Kyzentun: I think you might need to put down the meshes for a bit

I'll check to see if the visual delay is changed, I don't think it is and I don't have a cat :P I'll check that out and see if I accidentally changed that. but I tried removing the entire appdata folder and had stepmania rebuild it from scratch with all default preferences and that didn't change anything so I moved my old one back ;-; this bugs the hell out of me because I use stepmania as a type of stress reliever type thing and it makes me feel like I'm back in my guitar hero days... I'm sad that game died and never got to get the new ones and play online with ppl. why did I have to have it for the ps2 lol, I was actually really really good in my prime, good enough where my dad purchased me an expensive professional type guitar hero controller :P

EDIT: First off I screwed up its actually only a 0.151 offset NOT 1.51 like I said but it's still far enough off to where I have to edit it manually before I can "fine tune" it in the calibrate audio sync section of options. idk what happened and why I thought it was 1.51 but apparently I did. anyways the visual delay was in fact at 0 too so it's not that
