Forums » Chit-chat » Where are the folders?

1
Hi! I'd really like some help. I previously downloaded Stepmania and had a new folder created where I can place songs and announcers into, but now that I have got Stepmania 5.0 Beta 4, I can't seem to find any of the folders that were created like the previous download.

There was a folder created, unfortunately no other folders existed within that folder where I can place songs into.

Any chance someone knows?

Thanks!

The Docs link at the top of the page.
Data Locations

Modern operating systems have user profiles, which means certain files are in different locations from previous versions of StepMania.

A list of user data locations:

Windows: %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/
Linux: ~/.stepmania-5.0/
Mac OS
On Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) and newer, the Library directory in /Users/<username> is no longer readily accessible as it was in previous versions of Mac OS.

You can get there using the Go to Folder... command. It can be found in the Go menu at the top of your screen while on your Desktop.

You should install your user content via this path: ~/Library/Application Support/StepMania 5/

and you can access your preferences via: ~/Library/Preferences/StepMania 5/

I'm going to call it the User Data Folder. Wherever you see "User Data Folder", replace it with the location that is appropriate for the OS you use.
If "User Data Folder/Songs" doesn't exist, it is safe to create it and place song packs inside it. The same is true for the other content folders.

Updated from Beta 1something to 4a myself a day ago, had the same question. Seems settings and stuff are still loaded from the application data folder (had to wipe that manually to reset my configs since it's not wiped on uninstall*), but now Stepmania will read from the Songs and such folders in it's own install directory (defaults to C:\Games\Stepmania\).

* - Specifically, 4a's uninstaller doesn't wipe that. I installed 4a with 1something already installed initially.

I really dislike using the appdata method for stepmania, especially for Songs, as on a multi-user system you end up having to install the songs multiple times chewing up disk space, it's much easier to install to a different area (eg c:\games\stepmania) and use the Portable method, also in the docs

Portable Mode

If you wish to make your copy of StepMania portable, create a blank file called Portable.ini in the StepMania install folder. This will create the various save folders in the directory itself. (As a side effect, this makes it similar to an install of StepMania 3.9.)
