I didn't say anything about sm tools, sm itself does it now.

I think the mime types are "text/xml" and "application/zip". StepMania will also accept .xml and .zip extensions in case you have a browser mangles extensions based on mime type (Safari). All transfers are HTTP over port 22.

I was thinking along the lines of officially getting our own registered types. Renamed zips or not, it has a clear benefit.

What is the benefit? What effort does it take? I have no experience with it, but it seems unlikely to me that any standards body would be interested in spending any time on file formats for a small game.

It's just a few emails I think. Just write a quick summary about the fileformat and it's purpose and so on. And there is no reason not to apply. Size doesn't matter here IMHO.

It's probably more interesting registering the stepfile format than the other ones, but I think you can do bulk registrations.

Perhaps when we look into a new stepfile format (which I'm sure will take place now), we can register that one and just not worry about the old format?

Why not register it now?

You're welcome to give it a try. Without a very tangible benefit though, I can't justify spending any time on it myself given all the other work to do.

There is absolutely NO reason to have sm* filestypes added to the official mime list. The -ONLY- reason would be to have the files execute right away instead of dow- oh wait "run as"
