oh I'm getting the artifacts as well though i was trying to force it to play though my usb headphones. I set it to default in ubauntu. but it still played though my soundcard and i'm not sure what to change the settings to in stepmania's preferences.ini to force it to switch to my usb headphones.

so should i use something other than alsa?

-Update- after rebooting it seemed the artifacts went away. *doesn't know why* though still havn't figured out how to make it use my usb headphones.

-Update2- the artifacts seem to have returned.

-update3- ok i guess sometimes there is artifacts in the sound. and sometimes it isn't there.

Yes the artifacts in some executions aren't there, but most of the times there are problems. The issue with the usb headphones is because PulseAudio handle well changing audio streams, if you use a recent distro you can use gnome-volume-control and all the streams, actual and future streams, should be redirected to the device you choose. The problem is that Stepmania doesn't go through PulseAudio and should be, if his ALSA driver is compliant 100% with the alsa API it should appear as something like "ALSA plug-in [stepmania]" is the application streams but it don't.

I going to try to do something with two drivers for PulseAudio in the stepmania's mailing list but I don't think I could. If you know anybody who knows tha PulseAudio API and have skills with c++ tell him/her if could be interested in making a pulse driver for stepmania.

Thanks for the info.

I normally run windows xp. Though about every year or so I jump on linux to see how it's improved. To see if it's time to leave windows in the dust. heh.

I played with the c++ some in windows trying to code game in sdl and then in direct3d. I had the big habit of never finishing anything. I'm not sure where to start on writing something like that. nor know anyone else
heh

I wonder if I looked at it if I could make heads or tails out of it.
