Do you by chance have a picture of what you're talking about with the cardboard? What I was thinking of doing was to get a piece of wood the same size as the pad and use some duct tape to tape the pad to the wood, that way it won't slide about and hopefully be more accurate.

I'm not sure how thick the carpet is, maybe 1"? It's an apartment so I don't know much about it, I can ask though.

I don't think I have a photographable situation handy as I'm not in my usual home location right now. Don't think too hard about this; just improvise. You don't really have to cover all the seams; just focus for now on the two places in the middle where four seams meet.
