Porting themes is a bit of a hassle.
Dear Robber, You wont believe where I am# I(m at the Mac Expo ænd I am USING thep colic new Macwheel laptop. I'll BET YOU ARE JEAlouz
Of course you can! You can port themes from any version of StepMania to any other, with variable success depending on the source and target versions. As PHD said, it is not easy.
(anything below 4) to (anything below 4): (relatively) easy
3.9 to (anything above 4): it's probably hard, but I haven't tried it.
(anything) to 4.0a: unnecessary at the moment.
(anything) to sm-ssc: slightly hard, but worth the effort
sm-ssc to (anything): I believe this has only been done once? SSC themes already look good enough on sm-ssc.
(anything) to 4.0b: can't convince myself that it's worth doing. Everything below 4.0 uses sprite and actor files, everything else other than 4.0b uses lua. So it's a choice between auto-converting files from 3.9 and changing some code, or converting files from lua to xml manually. (I may be oversimplifying things here because I'm not really familiar with themes.)
Porting sm-ssc themes to sm4 alphas is pretty painless; you just have to account for the SM4a default theme.
Porting 3.9 themes to sm-ssc is easy in the right hands, and assuming the theme doesn't implement various things that have disappeared.
short answer: stick to the former 4.0.b6, since 4.0.b8 or a RE:4.0.b7 shouldn't have the same errors (and i hope it comes out soon)
OR
look back maybe up to 2-3 pages in this thread, i commented to some1 else post asking for 4.0.b7 with links to a better version...
i've said it before and i'll say it again, i prefer to wait for the next update >.>, but options are important
Tried it and it didn't work. It started up and everything, but when I selected the song and options, the game crashed.Originally Posted by shakesoda

honestly you can click on the little blue box next to shakesoda's name to then scroll on to read how the thread led to possible answers...
...maybe there isn't a way to fix that issue yet, idk... but i prefer to wait for the next release, which shouldn't have the same neglected release :/
edit- you commented on the posts around the area i took the link from ._., i didn't edit anything fyi, i just brought up the links that i saw and noted to read from that post on :/
