Default .smzip songs installed and work properly... but no folder in the songs!

Ok, i have a odd problem. I downloaded Family Farce's hopscotch mix 2 and 3 packs and they came in a .smzip folder.

They installed easily and I am able to play them in Stepmania with no hiccups

But, when I look in the SM program folder and then inside the Songs folder... there is no Hopscotch Mix 2 or 3 containing folder nor any songs in them.

Now keep in mind I already said they all work... So where did they go if they aren't in the SM program folder? They can't work anywhere else obviously.

It's like they're hidden, but when I do a search, none of them come up.

I am running SM 3.9 and Windows Vista if that helps at all.

    Thanks!

It's saved somewhere in documents and settings/appdata instead of the songs folder. One thing I don't like about Vista.

Wow thanks! Why does it go in there anyway? It's completely hidden in searches and doesn't make any sense because that is not the actual folder I installed SM in. It's a completely seperate area of the system.

To be exact, I found it in C: > documents and settings > Username > app > local > virtual store > Program Files (x86) > Stepmania

That's for anyone else who may have this problem.

Is there any way I can prevent this from happening again? Or will I just have to move the songs out of there every time I get a .smzip file?

    Thanks!

Not that I know of. From what I understand Vista ignores the songs folder entirely so there is no point in moving the songs.

    Question

Hmmm... I always put .zip SM files into the normal songs folder and nowhere else. But, when I get .smzip files, they automatically go into that other directory I listed above... So, I think both folders must work for some reason. But, you'd think that if it's already aware of the folder that they would go in normally, it would put them in there instead of creating a new songs folder somewhere else.

Guess it is just a Vista thing. Can't be explained. Ha ha!

On Windows XP I didn't have this problem, they went right in the correct folder. No other songs folder was created anywhere. Man, I wish that computer's hard drive wouldn't have failed. :( Now all new computers like this one comes with Vista and I can't get rid of it for XP because of warranty.

Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it!

My previous post was just a guess from my experience. One time I transferred my simfiles to a Vista PC, added a few charts to them, and transferred them back to my XP laptop only to realize they were gone. The simfiles were exactly the same as when I first put them in Vista. Before knowing what the problem was I just remade the charts. I learned the lesson the hard way. =/

Oh wow! That must've got you a little mad... All that work and you didn't know what happened to it... :(

So I'm guessing that when you edit .sm files, they get saved to that weird directory too? Wow, you'd think they would just overwrite the .sm file as usual because that's what you think you are editing.

I can't find that, even with show hidden folders!

What I did after I figure out how it works, is I change .smzip to .zip and you can open it like you do any other zip file and put it where you want it.

@alter: I had to "force" my way in the "documents and settings" folder so to speak with a Vista trick. First make sure that you still are showing hidden files and folders. Then do a search, and in the search results bar, type in: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\ Replace %username% with the name of your account of course and it should get in. Then navigate to that spot I pointed out in my above post. Or maybe it's not there, that's just where I found it.

@krinkle: You can do that? I didn't know. Nice tip, thanks! I thought that the file type can only be changed properly through a file conversion program or something.
