    Default Noob Friendly Song Manager

There are plenty of threads where people are asking how to install/delete/do whatever with songs, and apparently "READ THE STICKIES" doesn't work. So how about an easy-to-use song manager? There can be options to install songs from a zip/smzip on your computer, delete songs, move songs, and more basic stuff. Maybe you can press an F-key (F9 for example) to switch between the Editor menu and the Song manager.

I'm not a noob but this would be helpful.

    I support this idea.

Maybe a few SMTools enhancements, simply.

... with non-open-source UnRAR Code thrown in? (Since many Stepmania-related files are distributed in RAR archives)

I'll say intergrate LZMA/7z support instead...

I'm not sure I understand how this could be any simpler than it is. smzip files can already be simply unzipped to the stepmania directory, and done... Anything can be added or removed from the song by simply placing the file in the folder and taking it out. The step engine is very well done in my opinion; you can add anything from quarter to 64th notes, and there's a handy clap noise that can sound with every note. I can think of no better way to ensure the steps are synced up properly.

Theres a song manager for the Frets on Fire alarain mod. it works pretty well i tryed to be slick and tell it to look at the StepMania songs folder but it didn't work. Maybe someone who knows programing can take a look at it and alter it to recognize StepMania songs. I think the only reason way it wont work is because the file types that make up the song folders of FOF and SM are different. Like i said i dont know anything about programming but i think it would be easy to alter the program's code and have it read the file types that make up SM songs rather than FOF songs

Holonet its not about adding songs. Mainly for me its about being able to look at all my SM songs and finding the duplications and taking them out. PPl who download huge packs of songs like on bit torrent or anything like that have multiples of the same song and finding them is quite tricky and time consuming. To be able to see what songs you have in ur SM folder in a stand alone program would be ideal for ppl with thousands (yes thousands like i do) and id say a good thousand or two are either duplications, too hard to play , or they simply don't like them and keep them inbecause its just a project to try and find them and pick them out of the song folder. How cool would it be to just click open a program and find a song by either the title or its picture on the roulette? ( the FOF song manager i was talking about also shows the casset pik but i think could be programmed altered to read the roulette piks) On top of that be able to change the steps or whatever else to it , like maybe the change background pik or add a background vid?

I agree with the finding a song by its title bit. I have already actually started a thread a while ago suggesting a "song search" function. From "song manager," I got a different image. Sorting is handy, but the process of installing songs, which the initial poster referred to, is pretty straight-forward in my opinion. Sure it could be improved, but I think there are other things that ought to take a front seat to that. But that's just my opinion. I think it's clear that it needs to be a little more articulate just what the "song manager" in question is.

maybe thats what the others were thinking but my previous post are maybe just my personal wants. i know its an old thread i just found it because i was web surfing trying to find one. (An SM song manager with no luck but i gave up about an hour ago anyway lol) But maybe someone could look this post and see if they can convert the FOF song manager to stepmania because i dont think im the only one that would like this idea to become a reality.

    Default I'll do it!

    Hey there...

This is kind of an old thread, but (for me) the need remains: I'd like an easy, intuitive, friendly way to "review" my collection and easily see a list of my songs, play a quick sample of it, and delete it if it falls short of my expectations.

To that end, I'm working on a simple Adobe Air app (and I DO mean "simple") that will simply let you pick a Songs directory, and it recursively scans it. It then prepares a list of songs with the banner, title and artist. It has two buttons on each row: Play, and Delete.

Voila - fits my needs to quickly prune down my collection so it'll fit on my wimpy laptop hard drive to take to parties.

It's not quite done and is very much in beta, but I expect to have it done in a day or two. If you're interested in beta (alpha?) testing it, drop me a note - c mich ae lis @ g mail dot com. I make no claims as to suitability, no warranty, it may eat your hard drive, etc, etc.

    Cheers,
    Chris
