-Yes, everybody would have USB ports

-Most 'normal' people don't even know what S-Video IS, and they probably don't wanna spend extra money on setting it up either (also not everybody has their computer located next to their TV)

-Wii has USB ports too, normal USB pads can be hooked up to it (and also Wii pads)

Saying what you say here is just like saying it is completely pointless to make dance games for PS2/XBOX.

The major difference here is, Stepmania is a PC game, not a DDR CS. That aside, it is also ILLEGAL to write games for the Wii without Nintendo's permission, or something like that. They control what games are on their system, and if you do not get permission, they take complete ownership of your game and code, so if Stepmania was ported to the Wii, Nintendo would own Stepmania.

    So, stop asking.

What I meant by the first point was that not everyone has a dance pad that connects through usb.

Honest question: How is it illegal? Wii homebrew uses an exploit resulting in no voiding of warranties and such.

    Edit:

I think you're thinking of putting Stepmania on a retail disc and selling it and such. What im talking about is porting it to the Wii as homebrew as there is an exploit available (many homebrew apps are already made).

I knwo what you are talking about, but it's in Nintendo's ToS. It states, basically, that they own all software that runs on their system, including games, or some such.

There is a whole other thread about it in this forum I believe where it is explained a lot better than I can explain.

Also, people need to learn that money needs to be spent eventually. If they REALLY want to play SM on their TV, then they can spend the money or move their hardware around accordingly. If they can't spend $20 on a new dance pad or $30 on a used videocard or LEARN what S-Video is, then they don't want to play SM bad enough.

What they WANT to do, is ***** and complain until OTHER people do THEIR work for them, or give them a workaround where they have to do nothing.

But Nintendo doesn't have any say over homebrew programs nor can they do anything about them. Otherwise, you wouldnt see so many emulators for the Wii.

Well, that's the thing, they do. They might not be able to do a whole lot about them, but if word gets out that Stepmania is freely distributed for the Wii and competes with the DDR games for the Wii, they could shut the WHOLE Stepmania project down by claiming it, hense why no one wants to risk making a secret Stepmania port. It can be done, but with the risk of it, just buy a used PS2 and get a hacked ITG disk and add your own songs to it.

In that sense, how come there's an Xbox port? Also, in that sense, how come Nintendo hasn't shut down things like Snes9x or Genesis+.

XBOX: Because Microsoft does not claim ownership of everything that runs on their system.

Other projects: Maybe Nintendo does not care? But the potential IS there. IF someone did port SM to Wii, Nintendo COULD claim it. Why risk years of hard work just so you can save $50?

Im guessing on Nintendo's care radar:

Piracy of virtual console games>>>>>>>>>>>A DDR clone

If Nintendo really cared about homebrew, they would've done something about the emulators as they are actually losing money rather than caring about Stepmania. Plus, with how Nintendo has been nowadays (GC, DS homebrew), they dont really care about what anyone does, nor have they done anything. Not to mention they could've stop all homebrew ages ago with a simple patch but they havent done anything.

Regardless of practicality, legality is the issue. It is illegal to do. That might not stop other home brew projects, but after In The Groove, I doubt anyone wants to see Stepmania go down as well.
