Default Frequently Asked Questions (Read this first)

This is short for now because I can only think of one question. If you have more, let me know and I'll add them to the first post.

I can't hit more than two arrows with my keyboard.
This is a problem with your keyboard (and not StepMania). Most keyboards can't seem to hit more than two arrows at a time due to a number of issues.

One workaround is to remap your keys. Not exactly the best option if you like using the arrow keys, but changing your key mapping to letter keys may work better.

Another option is to buy a new keyboard. This is the more expensive option and requires some research.

Some keyboards known to work with more than two keypresses are:
    • USB keyboards (not all, however)
    • generic Dell keyboards (at least some older model Dell keyboards)
    • Razer Tarantula

I REMAPPED THE ENTER KEY, NOW IT DOESN'T WORK!!!
In SM 3.9: Delete (SM folder)/Data/KeyMaps.ini

    In SM 4.0:
    Windows - delete (my documents)\StepMania CVS\Saves\KeyMaps.ini
    Linux - delete ~/.stepmania cvs/Saves/KeyMaps.ini
    Mac - delete ~/Library/Preferences/StepMania CVS/KeyMaps.ini

    Default 1st post! (for me)

You can add Ideazon Merc Stealth (and Merc, same with no lights ;) ) to that list, both gaming butterfly keys and arrow keys can hold down 4 at once.

(I tested this with my Merc Stealth on stepmania 3.9)

You can just press the enter button at the bottom right of your keyboard (by the number pad) if you accidentally bound the other enter button to something else.

Not if have a keyboard that doesn't have a numpad you can't (such as a laptop).
Yoshi is better than Mario, and you know it's true

Beta testing at the moment. Good at pad? PM me for details.

    Hi there,

I'm posting this in here as this seems to be a very common problem: the can't press/hold more than one arrow at the same time problem. All the previous threads aimed to help this problem have been rendered helpless as most of the links are now broken - and one I'm sad to say did a little damage to my computer :( If anyone has a solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate any advice and/or help. Btw, I'm using a dilong adapter and a PS2 mat and attempting to play the standard, single player mode.

Please and thank you in advance :)

EDIT: also, to clarify, more than one button at the same time is fine on my keyboard, just the mat is providing a problem

Clarification for the Mac keybinding issue. For Stepmania 5 on Mac OSX 10.7.0 or higher.

there are two separate library folders on your mac. One under the hardrive and the other listed under your user name. This is what is causing the confusion! (note in the picture how there are two folders named library. the grayed out one is what you are looking for)

First: You need to have the hidden files turned on (tutorial here -> http://www.mikesel.info/show-hidden-...s-x-10-7-lion/).

Then: once those are turned on you need to access your hard drive with this path /(hardrive)/Users/(your user name)/Library/Preferences/StepMania 5/Keymaps.ini

Then throw that bothersome file in the trash and empty it!

a few notes: when you turn on the hidden files, everything that should be hidden will appear as grayed out. you can still access them, your library folder in your user account will look that way.

Heres a picture of what you should see. Attachment 2983
